"One way of thinking about the growth and international expansion of the modern LDS Church is to borrow from diffusion theories that describe the conditions and ways in which different kinds of market innovations develop and spread in time and place. In this chapter, we discuss a model of religious diffusion that incorporates what historical geographers refer to as both spatial and functional factors in their analysis. We argue that it is precisely these factors that have strongly contributed to the numerical growth and international diffusion of the modern LDS Church.3 Furthermore, we will show that diffusion factors have played a key role in what may be called an “urban hierarchical pattern” of LDS expansion in different countries around the globe."
