"Rebekah Clark focuses on the suffrage activism of Latter-day Saint women while acknowledging the important role of other groups in acquiring their sought-after rights. In an era of growing political divides and within a culture saturated with the influence of the patriarchal Church, woman’s suffrage in Utah was made possible through the women’s cooperation with different groups within the Church as well as the support of other faith and political groups. Clark contextualizes women’s initial enfranchisement in Utah, how that issue became entangled with that of Utah’s statehood, and how Utah suffragists and their allies continued to advocate for universal suffrage after their own eventual enfranchisement. Clark also explains that while these women were progressive political and social advocates, they were loyal to the Church, many holding prominent leadership positions. She concludes that these accomplishments emerged from the context of women faithfully working within—rather than against—their religious and cultural frameworks, making allies of powerful male leaders and helping them understand that 'the advancement of God’s kingdom depends on the equality of men and women.'"
