Mormon writers discussed here, most of whom were decidedly rural American and British Protestants in their theological upbringings, neither accepted these broad categories uncritically nor disregarded them entirely. Instead, they adapted them in service of Mormonism's doctrinal claims about the transference of divine power, particularly the scriptural continuity of seer stones and the written word connecting Joseph to the prophets of the Old World and the New. In the context of seer stones and other means of interacting with unseen-yet-material beings, influences both divine and demonic are equally possible but not inevitable. Rather, the tools—both material and spiritual—for determining truth from error or angels from devils are to be placed within the reach of all faithful Saints.
