"The book does not purport to be an in-depth study of the history of the church from 1846 to the present (1972), but it does deal with many of the vital experiences of the Saints as they attempted to establish the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 'top of the mountains' to fulfill the commandment to 'take the gospel to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people.'
". . . . The scope of the text begins with the Saints preparing for their exit from Nauvoo , Illinois, during the fall and winter of 1845 and 1846. The death of our latest president, Joseph Fielding Smith, and the appointment of our newest, Harold B. Lee, bring the volume to its conclusion." [Preface]
