"The purpose of this paper, then, is twofold. First, I will trace the development of the vertical sealing rituals and their doctrinal understandings, relying heavily on Stapleys and Browns excellent articles in the 2011 Journal of Mormon History. Then I will discuss the theological and practical implications of this development. Second, I will argue that it is not until 1894, when President Woodruff abandoned the law of adoption that the sealing tradition reached its final form. If “the doctrine of sealing developed over the course of the twenty-one years following Moroni’s 1823 visit,” it stands to reason that the doctrine would continue to develop after. Brigham Young said, “Joseph in his life time did not receive every thing connected with the doctrine of redemption, but he has left the key with those who understand how to obtain and teach to this great people all that is necessary for their salvation and exaltation in the celestial kingdom of our God.'"
