"This article is about the unique history of one road in particular. Travelers along Highway 402 in Ontario, Canada, drive by a seemingly innocuous sign that announces the upcoming exit to Highway 79. However, the local name given to this highway, “Nauvoo Road,” would surely pique the curiosity of members of both The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints and the Community of Christ. The name “Nauvoo” has significant historical and cultural meaning for both of these religious groups. This 'Nauvoo Road' was built in 1846 by a group of Latter-day Saint converts who, due to persecution and the call to gather with the main body of the church, left their homes in Canada for Nauvoo, Illinois. The road they built through the woods of southeastern Ontario has since been enlarged and paved and today serves as an important transportation corridor. However, this road is also important to the legacy and identity of members of the LDS church in the area. If travelers exited Highway 402 and traveled south on Highway 79, they would reach a small town called Alvinston, where they would find a marker erected in August of 1946 by the London Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that outlines the history of the building of the Nauvoo Road."
