"During his time in Nauvoo, Alexander Neibaur s journal entries became more sporadic, and large periods of time went by without him recording a single entry. Among his journal entries from this period is his well-known entry giving an account of the First Vision of Joseph Smith Jr., which was related to him by the Prophet himself. This account, however, dated May 24, 1844, is only the beginning portion of his journal entry for that date. The remainder of his account on that day, together with his additional entries made during the month following, offers unique and valuable insight into the turmoil, which existed in and around Nauvoo during this time. Specifically, Neibaur s journal entries provide unique details relating to the rising contention between Joseph Smith and William Law, the destruction of the Nauvoo Expositor Press, and several other events leading up to the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith on June 27,1844. As a close friend and language tutor to the Prophet, Neibaur’s journal serves as a primary source for learning about the last few weeks of the Prophet Joseph Smiths life." [Author]
