"Joseph Smith’s First Vision is of utmost importance to the beliefs of the modern Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but throughout the nineteenth century, it was instead the vision of Moroni appearing to Joseph that was the emphasis of the Restoration. Brigham Young and other leaders emphasized Moroni as the restorer of ancient truth. Moroni appeared in proclamation, expositions, lyrics, and testimonials. The visits of John the Baptist, Peter, James, and John also were often taught. Changing needs of the church (the end of plural marriage and the rise of modern philosophy) brought about a new emphasis on the First Vision and on God and Jesus Christ." [Publisher]
