"In 2009, Richard J. Mouw published a response to Richard Bushman’s question, “Is Joseph Smith possible for you?” Here Mouw adds to that response, exploring other considerations of Joseph Smith’s character, his First Vision, and the relationship between Evangelicals and Mormonism. Evangelical hostility toward Mormonism may stem in part from competing proselytization, but Mouw suggests Alasdair MacIntyre’s theory of social embodiment in judging the character of a religion’s founder. He also considers the history of angelic visitation and the common religious yearning to connect the supernatural to the concrete. The Joseph Smith of the First Vision is very possible for Mouw personally; however, the legitimacy of Joseph’s spiritual quest is separate from that of the answers he claimed to have received."
