"Marsden surveys American religious thinkers’ views on millennialism, including Jonathan Edwards, Lorenzo Dow, Lyman Beecher, and Alexander Campbell. Many believed that America had a leading role in the development of the millennium. Postmillennialism, the most widespread view in America at Joseph’s time, was that the world would get progressively better as the gospel spread and that there would be a millennial golden age after which Jesus would personally return. Premillennial views also emphasize spreading the gospel but teach that the millennium would begin with Christ’s return, with dispensational premillennialists taking a pessimistic view that the world will continue to worsen until that time. The distinctly premillennialist views taught by Joseph Smith resemble those of contemporary optimistic premillennialist Protestants and were suited to answering the religious questions of the day."
