"Historian Steven C. Harper, editor in chief of BYU Studies, addressed a conference held at the Huntington Library in January 2020 and examined the evolution of how the Church has treated Joseph Smith’s First Vision over the years. In the early years, Joseph was reluctant to talk or write about his first vision, leaving only a couple of public accounts. Orson Pratt was instrumental in keeping the memory of the vision alive until the 1838 account was canonized in 1880. Dealing with the end of polygamy, Joseph F. Smith was instrumental in shifting attention from Joseph’s last revelation to his first. In 1938, J. Reuben Clark gave an address to Church faculty that cemented the First Vision as a fundamental of the faith. Over the next several years, the Church responded to critics of the First Vision such as Fawn Brodie and the Tanners. In the meantime, historians discovered other accounts of the First Vision and published them. An article submitted to Dialogue by Rev. Wesley P. Walters questioning the accuracy of Joseph's account lit a fire under Church apologists, who responded to Walters's assertions. Finally, in the information age, the internet has made it necessary for the Church to publish as much information as possible about the First Vision and the various accounts of it." [Publisher]
