Kilgore diary (p. 172-197): April 10, 1850 to August 5, 1850. Kilgore provides detailed daily entries. Entries usually include names of settlements passed, distance traveled, lay of the land, weather, and graves passed, if any. If any graves were passed that day, Kilgore writes everything known to him about the deceased and cause of death. Entries often also include available provisions and prices. Kilgore mentions a fire at Winter Quarters, gives detailed descriptions of Chimney Rock and an encounter with a band of Sioux Indians trying to petition the United States government for recognition of land rights. Kilgore also writes a very detailed description of the Salt Lake Valley as it appeared in 1850. Openshaw diary (p. 197-210): June 28, 1856 to November 30, 1856. One unbroken entry covers October 3 to November 30. He writes of his journey from Boston to Salt Lake. Entries usually included the distance traveled that day, towns passed through, the weather, and deaths, if any. Openshaw was a member of the Martin Handcart Company and records the company's rescue by Joseph Young. He continues to write after the rescue until the company arrives in the Salt Lake Valley.
