"The story that follows explores the connection between Ashley’s
ideas for the South and his failed attempt in 1869 to redraw the West.
It is filled with Ashley’s political machinations and the corresponding
effort of Latter-day Saint leaders to claim citizenship for themselves
as they actively sought to shape public opinion in their favor and
thereby preserve the geopolitical integrity of Utah Territory. Allegations of corruption, graft, and sexual impropriety also pepper the
story. In short, it is a classic political tale but with important lessons
about integrating religion into a more broadly conceived version of
Reconstruction." -
