"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other religions that branched off of the early church share in this complexity
surrounding dark tourism. Fascination with tragedy pervades several
historic sites, including scenes of suffering like Hawn’s Mill and
Mountain Meadows. The most prominent dark tourism site for the
branches of the Restoration is Carthage Jail, the site of the martyrdom of Joseph Smith and a starting point for the fracturing of the
faith. This article examines how the jail has been transformed from
a scene of loathing into a place of healing for members of the family
of faiths. It also explores how residents of Carthage have viewed their
famous landmark over time." -
