"The scribal explication of revelation texts illustrates this transition made in the earliest years. The revelations were first given to
Joseph Smith’s family or close associates—followers intimate with
Smith’s personal past, his personality, hopes, and frustrations. With
an increase of believers, his revelations spoke to this growing church
population. The organization of the Church of Christ in April 1830
not only officially marked the beginning of the religious movement,
it introduced the budding bureaucracy that would preserve the revelations for a growing church membership. Finally, the expansion of
the church throughout the United States prompted a reorientation
of time and place for Smith and his revelations. The contextualization of the revelations, then, offer not simply an initial take of the
individual or collective revelations within the early church, they offer
a reflection of that changing church—a time when so few contemporaneous records exist." -
