"In 1941, Woodman’s extensive research for Death Valley Days
took her through St. George, Utah, an area rich in Latter-day Saint
pioneer history. The desert community became the stage for her
radio dramas on pioneer life, but one in particular reached deep
into the collective memory of “Utah’s Dixie,” to a tender, spiritual
narrative still shared in the community. For years, local Latter-day
Saints had circulated their own tradition about the construction of
the St. George Tabernacle, one of the centerpieces of the city and a
beloved community and religious center. Through Death Valley Days,
America met Peter Neilson and David Cannon, two Latter-day Saint
pioneer stalwarts in southern Utah, whose story of faith and sacrifice
for the tabernacle Woodman placed within the traditional canon of
the American Western. Her “Faith of Our Father’s” episode offers
one example of how the medium of radio helped shape popular
conceptions of the Latter-day Saint people." -
