"In late June 1830, less than three months after the Church of Christ was organized in Fayette, New York, Joseph and Emma Smith visited Colesville, New York, where they met with an expanding group of early believers who resided in the vicinity. On Monday morning, June 28, 1830, Oliver Cowdery baptized Emma Hale Smith in a stream, probably on the Joseph Knight Sr. property. That decision, probably more so than any other up to that point, set Emma on a divergent religious path from the rest of her family. Hostilities against Joseph Smith and Mormonism were at a fever pitch that summer, and locals had earlier delayed the baptism of Emma and others by breaking down a dam at that same location which had been constructed for that purpose. Residents also prevented their confirmations later that evening when Joseph was arrested for what he described as “being a disorderly person; of setting the country in an uproar by preaching the Book of Mormon.”[Editors Abstract]
