When in 1932 Utah senator Reed Smoot lost the seat that he had held for nearly thirty years, the moment was a bitter one for him. Years later, he was still brooding over his defeat. It was in an automobile at a funeral that Smoot reportedly fixed the blame for the loss on one of his fellow apostles in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS)."Bro. Ivins had me defeated all over Utah before I knew a thing about it," he exclaimed.
