"IN MARCH 1972 the Church Historian’s Office of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints became the Historical Department of the Church and Leonard J. Arrington was named Church Historian and head of the new History Division. In April 1977 Elder G. Homer Durham became managing director of the Historical Department. A little over a year later, he announced that the History Division’s mission was shifting away from scholarly publication and more toward archival work and research projects for General Authorities and other Church agencies. In 1982 Leonard and most of his remaining staff were transferred to the new Joseph Fielding Smith Institute for Church History at BYU, with Leonard as its first director"[Author]
