January 21, 1853 to March 9, 1853. Clark writes about his experience crossing the Atlantic on the Golconda. He describes his cabin, weather, company births and deaths, and the health of his family. On deck, Clark observes whales and flying fish. He details the case of a fellow immigrant accused of stealing beef and a burial at sea that goes horribly awry. Clark tends to the ship's injured steward and assists him in his duties. The diary ends with the entire ship holding a washday in anticipation of their arrival in New Orleans.
