This essay tracks the shift in Mormon theology from a salutatory environmentalism to its replacement of restoration, atonement, and Zion building. Many early leaders in the Church, like Brigham Young, taught about environmental responsibility and the need to protect God's physical environment. However, when these leaders died, no later leaders kept up the environmental tradition, and Mormon doctrine and culture forgot their environmental responsibility, and they forgot that it was ever taught.
