"Congregationalism arose in sixteenth-century England as an element of the Puritan protest against the established Church of England (Anglican Church). Although King Henry VIII had formed the Anglican Church by breaking with the Roman Catholic Church, much Roman dogma and liturgy remained, which the Puritans abhorred. Some started their own churches, an illegal practice. Congregationalists stressed the right of an individual congregation to determine its own practices. Each church decided upon its polity and elected its clergy without a central authority dictating policy." [Author]
