January 13, 1848 to May 1848. Bliss writes of his pleasure with the Salt Lake Valley, the warm weather, and his desire to reunite with his family in Winter Quarters. He constantly seeks permission to begin the journey, but is denied several times due to the bad weather. Finally, he is able to leave, recording the path he followed. Bliss is beset with severe storms while crossing the plains, where he writes of the party rescuing two boys unprepared for the snow. The journal ends with him just outside of Winter Quarters.
