"A number of Mormon writers have produced studies recently that claim that 'evidence can adduced-largely external and circumstantial- that commands respect for the claims of the Book of Mormon concerning its ancient Near Eastern Background.' If we set out to test the hypothesis that the Book of Mormon really represents the ancient culture of its reputed authors, what would we look for? A basic criterion would surely be that certain features that have parallels from the ancient Near East could not be explained on the basis of the culture of Joseph Smith himself. Such features, in order to have true evidential value, should have specific characteristics that would rule out of the explanation that the book is simply a product of early-nineteenth-century America."
