The development of Mormonism’s encounter with interfaith questions began with the need in the earliest decades to articulate and defend, in a hostile religious environment, Mormonism’s “restored gospel” claims. Attention to the larger agenda of world religions became important when, in the early twentieth century, the Latter-day Saints began to develop international mission programs. In more recent decades, there has also been a focus by Mormon scholars on dialogue with other religious faiths, with the goal of promoting better interreligious understanding. Mormons also employ different theological resources in these recent efforts. In the past Mormons often explained the apparent commonalities among diverse religions in terms of the historical “diffusion” of the beliefs of ancient patriarchs. Today, more emphasis is placed on general revelation and the unique Mormon teachings regarding “premortal existence.”
