The purpose of this article is to explore [President James] Buchanan's capacity for friendship, especially under political pressure, and its implications for his presidency. At the heart of this examination are such behaviors as reciprocity, constancy, and willingness to deal forthrightly with the expectations of loyal supporters.
Rather than taking an encyclopedic approach, this study focuses primarily on Buchanan's connection to a little-known Philadelphia lawyer important to the opening years of his administration: Thomas L. Kane, clerk of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and son of its presiding judge, John K. Kane.
