Joseph Smith Jr.'s introduction to the legal system came at an early age. In January 1819, his father, Joseph Sr., and oldest brother, Alvin, initiated a lawsuit against Jeremiah Hurlbut arising from his sale of a pair of horses to the Smiths for $65.
