This article examines the opening of missionary work in Brazil in the context of LDS theology of the gathering up to 1940. It illustrates how perceptions of Church leaders and members towards southern Europeans and persons of African descent influenced the decision to work with German immigrants and not the majority Portuguese-speaking population. President Reinhold Stoof's mandate to proselyte to German speakers was why he sent missionaries to Brazil. Lastly, I explain why that decision mattered.
