Does Joseph’s Letter to Emma of 4 November 1838 Show that He Knew about Chiasmus?
Dialogue : A Journal of Mormon Thought (Dialogue Paperless)
"A letter by Joseph Smith to his wife Emma dated 4 November 1838 has been cited as evidence that he knew about chiasmus. We analyze the chiastic structure of this letter statistically in order to assess the strength of this evidence. We calculate a likelihood of 68% that this structure could have appeared by chance, and conclude that this letter is inadmissible as evidence that Joseph Smith knew about chiasmus. We discuss the conditions under which chiastic structure can be considered as valid evidence of intentionality." [Author]
