-
Utah State University Faculty Honor Lecture. Logan, Utah
-

The study of folklore 'is centrally and crucially important in our attempts to understand our own behavior and that of our fellow human beings.' For missionaries, folklore helps them to develop a sense of community. Also, folklore is a kind of 'silent rebellion' or a means of letting off steam. Another way folklore is used among missionaries 'is to persuade themselves and their companions to conform to accepted standards of conduct.'
