"In this chapter, we present the journal of Joseph S. Black, who was a loving son, a devoted husband, a revered father. His son Peter wrote: 'I wanted to say my father was the most ambitious, warm hearted, generous man that I have ever known. I looked over books that he kept when he was in the mercantile business and found that he trusted out over one hundred thousand dollars to the poor and to people in the Valley from whom he never collected; this in addition to many other things he gave them outright.' He was bishop of Deseret for many years and led his people both spiritually and temporally." [Author]
