My co-author, Jessica Finnigan, is not on the program, but she is my long-term research and writing partner. In 2014, we were both struggling with our place in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We were both participants in the Mormon feminist community and the topic of garments came up frequently in Mormon feminist discussion spaces. We both felt obligated to wear garments continually, but were not feeling great about that practice and decided to study our problem and this research came out of those feelings of frustration. To be clear about our social location, neither of us currently identify as LDS. She does not have a religious affiliation and I am ordained in Community of Christ.
I also want to warn you, that while we are trying to make comments and gather insights about garments, we tried to be fair to the LDS Church and those who wear garments. But not all of our findings fall under the categories of “positive” or “neutral.” It is clear from the data that for some people, garments have a negative impact on their lives. If you currently wear garments and are fully invested in the LDS Church, some of this talk may be difficult to hear.
