In this essay I hope to invigorate what to all appearances has been a moribund area of thought and discussion, in part by challenging pervasively but complacently held beliefs. In the first place, it seems to me that several central strands of Mormon thought militate in favor of determinism; I begin by exploring these, to motivate the discussion that follows. Next, I examine what seem to me to be the strongest barriers to Mormon acceptance of determinism, arguing that once both these objections and determinism are properly understood the objections fail. In the course of doing so, I will offer a more comprehensive formulation of the doctrine of free agency than is commonly set forth. [From the text]
