Schismatic movements have been frequent in Mormonism because of the belief that individuals can receive divine revelation, and the seemingly contradictory teaching that Joseph Smith restored “the one true church of Christ” as found in the New Testament. The wing of Mormonism called the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS) has perhaps been more susceptible to schism than the Utah-based church because it began as a dissenting movement. When in later generations disagreements arose, it was a little easier for dissenters to organize separate groups. By the 1960s the leadership of the RLDS Church was moving the church in a more liberal, ecumenical direction, which caused major defections.
