"It was in April 1855 at a session of General Conference that approximately 30 men were called as missionaries to go to Las Vegas. The purpose of the mission was to establish a halfway station for travelers between the Pacific Coast and Utah, maintain good rapport with the Indians and attempt to instruct them the ways o farming and cleanliness. In 1864, during the Civil War, U.S. troops were stations along the various trails to protect the route and those traversing it. Soldiers from San Diego occupied the old Las Vegas Fort and at that time they renamed it Fort Baker in honor of their commanding officer. February 1936...the Clark County Daughters began making plans for the preservation of the remnant of the old Las Vegas Fort." [Author] This chapter gives an account of the establishment of the Las Vegas Fort and the Las Vegas Mission.
