This article traces the history of the relationship between the major leaders and the most important intellectuals in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). The relationship is influenced by two institutional peculiarities within the Mormon church: 1) a hierarchy and a lay ministry, more than a professional one; and 2) the absence of any tradition of official theologians or of a formal, systematic theology. However, the Latter-day Saints Church (LDS) has always possessed an extraordinary body of intellectuals, totally restricted to its beginnings, but far more extensive in recent years. Most were historians and sociologists, since Mormon theology (or, more precisely, the doctrine) is inextricably intertwined with its official history.
