This chapter focuses on one of Joseph Smith's most enduring and influential revelations–the gathering of modern Israel. At the outset of the inaugural mission to England, Joseph Smith expressly forbade the teaching of the gathering. And yet, within three years, this doctrine would become central to the purposes of the British church. This chapter examines the gathering as it was explained, publicized, and adapted through the Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star–the official newspaper of the church in Britain published from 1840 until 1970. By examining the implementation and adaptation of this distinct doctrine, every other important aspect of British Mormon history is contextualized. [From the text]
