Henry Burkhardt was born in Chemnitz in 1930. His parents and grandparents were members of the Church. Between 1952 and 1990, he was the recognized leader of the Church. Between 1952 and 1990, he was the recognized leader of the Church in the GDR, first as a counselor to mission presidents who lived in West Berlin or in Hamburg, then after 1969 as the president of the Dresden Mission, president of the Freiberg Temple, and finally president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the GDR. The latter role was basically a political position, done to satisfy the government's wish to have just one responsible Church representative. [From the text]
