Parowan, Utah, was officially founded on January 13, 1851. On January 8, 1850, Parley P. Pratt and members of his exploring party came upon the Little Salt Lake Valley and dedicated an area near Heap's Spring as the city of Little Salt Lake. Based on Pratt's observations, Brigham Young called for settlement in what became known as Iron County because of its deposits of iron ore. George A. Smith was appointed to head the Iron Mission, and with a large company traveled from Salt Lake City to Iron County from December 1850-January 1851. Smith's company settled near the original Little Salt Lake and founded the settlement of Parowan.
