If there is one durable notion about the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints it is that it possesses a unique heritage, one that is apart from both the Mormon experience of the Great Basin and the mainstream religious tradition of American Protestantism. This has led its members to ponder the meaning of their past--to search for answers to difficult questions, both philosophical and theological on one hand and practical and historical on the other. The results of these investigations have been frightening at times, rewarding at others, and stimulating always. This has been especially true since the 1960s when a new generation of investigators, most of whom were not professional historians, began to research and write in a manner neither apologetic nor condemnatory but with the goal of understanding how and why the Reorganized Church developed and--since to a remarkable degree those investigators were members--how they came to be the type of people they were!
