"The organization one hundred years ago of the Zion's Co-Operative Mercantile Institution was accomplished under the direction of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and was the result of a series of circumstances and incidents which had been greatly affecting the lives of the people of Utah Territory. Working together for both spiritual and temporal survival was a matter of necessity for the Saints. The building of temples, places, of worship, business houses, roads and bridges, the fencing of land and other endeavors were all achieved by united effort. At Winter Quarters, while making preparations for the journey across the plains, not only the stock, wagons and provisions were acquired by communal purchase, but the poor, the widows, the orphans, the families of Mormon Battalion recruits were adequately cared for. Later, by co-operative effort, thousands of Saints were helped to reach their Zion." [Author] The article continues by accounting the history of the establishment of the Co-Operative Mercantile Institution and its effects on Church members.
