The article explores the difficulties and struggles in organizing Zion's Cooperative Mercantile Institution (ZCMI) as a viable wholesale/retail business in pioneer Utah during the administration of Mormon Church President Brigham Young. Topics covered include the boycott of all Gentile merchants implemented by Young, commitment of Young to theocracy, and the factors that contributed to the success of ZCMI over the years.
