Bringhurst relates his experiences moderating a roundtable colloquium dealing with Joseph Smith's 1844 campaign for president of the United States. Held at the Nauvoo Community of Christ in conjunction with the John Whitmer Historical Association meeting, the colloquium attracted a standing-room-only audience of over two hundred individuals. The innovative format consisting of four parts was suggested by Mike Riggs, past president of the John Whitmer Historical Association.
