The essentials of [William E. McLellin's] faith are found in the 1830 Book of Mormon, in the belief that human beings are capable of direct encounter with God. He well stated this core principle of Mormonism in a letter published in 1864 in Granville Hedrick's The Truth Teller. McLellin wrote that there is "one universal, immutable law existing and governing the whole in all ages of man ... the Lord's right to speak, and men's right to hear and his duty to obey. Sadly, none of the church organizations claiming allegiance to the Book of Mormon could claim McLellin for long. He was a "true believer" in original Mormonism. He could be called a prophetic figure, summoning the Saints to be true to the original genius of the movement. [From the text]
