"If we want to learn about the Old Testament, it should be allowed to stand by itself. Its unique message
is lost when we read it for what it might have or should have said to be in accord with the gospel of Jesus Christ. We cannot learn from a people whom we disdain for being too weak to be the good Christians Mormon theology says they should have been. Only if we grant that Old Testament people didn’t act like Christians because they weren’t Christians can we begin to understand the Old Testament’s tremendous contribution to the shape of Western society."
