Dale L. Morgan, preparing his bibliographies of the churches of the Mormon dispersion, dubbed William E. McLellin (1806-1883), Mormonism's "stormy petrel." Morgan's image of McLellin suggests the use of such modifiers as emotional, impulsive, opinionated, irritable, and controlling, at least in describing McLellin's nature. Considerable evidence supports this description, making McLellin a lively study in dissent. During a long life, he flitted from one Mormon faction to another, searching for what he perceived as the absolute truth of the gospel. His was a desperate and seeming frustrating search for God.
