The letters of a civilian employee attached to the military at Camp Douglas describe his impressions of the Mormons in the Salt Lake Valley between January and May 1863. He comments on the theater, polygamous marriage, Brigham Young, and other aspects of life among the Saints. He writes in a generally positive manner. Sketches and maps that he drew in his letters are reproduced in the article.
