"Utah's first settlers were the Indians, followed by many other individuals and groups who came within the confines of the territory as pioneers but whose sojourn was short or limited to just passing through the area en route to another destination. Emphasis has been placed upon the hisotry of those early immigrants who came here, founded the cities and hamlets and proved faithful to the religion they had espoused. Information concerning faithful ones who died prior to reaching their destination is also available. However, one group is often overlooked. Those who began the trek fully expecting to settle with the body of the Saints but because of circumstances beyond their control or upon reconsideration, failed to do so. It is our desire to revere the abiding faith, ability, honor, and integrity of all these remarkable pioneers. We are justly proud of our heritage, but must admit that numerous Mormons who never reached Utah and many non-Mormons helped to make it possible for us to enjoy it!" [Lesson Committee]
