"When the settlement of Utah was begun by the Mormon pioneers, no land surveys had been made. The area known as Utah was different in shape and size than the Utah we know. The eastern boundary of the territory was the Rocky Mountains, the west boundary was California. From the years 1847 to 1866, nearly all the state of Nevada, part of California and Wyoming were carved out of what was once the territory of Utah. Mormon settlement was a sort of patriarchal jurisdiction of the land. Land was given to the colonists as they arrived and selected the town in which they desired to settle. The bartering and trading of land in early days of the West forms an important part of the history of Utah. Land was plentiful, other needed articles were scarce; therefore land that now is costly was traded for articles that have very little value in today's markets." [Author]
