"Most of those who had crossed the plains during this time, came with wagons and ox teams, many through the aid of the Perpetual Emigrating Fund. But in 1855, funds were scarce, and the leaders decided to try the handcart mode of transportation, which plan was announced abroad among the Latter-day Saints. In early spring of 1856, the nearly 1800 Saints waiting on the banks of Clear Creek in Iowa City were obliged to remain in camp until a sufficient number of handcarts could be constructed. Most historians feel the venture was eminently successful; that no story ever written is filled with more loyalty or devotion to a cause." [Author] This chapter goes more in depth as it tells of each company that trekked to Utah.
